In April 1945, the 1st Free French Division attacked the Authion massif in order to drive out the Axis troops still present in the high country of Nice and open the road to Northern Italy.
This final battle, fought at the very end of the conflict, took place in relative indifference on the French Riviera, which had been liberated since August 1944. The action of the 1st Free French Division raises many issues where small and great history intertwine and prompts us to consider the place of this episode in collective memory.
