Concentus 16/18 presents a concert featuring works by Schütz, Cavalieri and Charpentier on the theme of the Passion of Christ.
Since the very beginnings of Christianity, the week before Easter has been a time for reflection on the death of Christ and the finitude of human existence. That's why all the great Western composers have devoted some of their finest musical pages to it. Concentus 16/18, a group of solo singers and instrumentalists newly created in Avignon, devotes its first concert to this musical and spiritual journey, from Heinrich Schütz's sublime oratorio "The Seven Words of Christ on the Cross" to Marc-Antoine Charpentier's sacred story "The Denial of St. Peter". We'll also discover a rarely performed work that heralded the "seconda pratica", the prelude to Baroque art in Rome at the very end of the 16th century: Emilio de Cavalieri's Lamentations. The famous "da Jacob" by 16th-century German composer Samuel Schein completes the program. A musical moment and/or a spiritual experience, Concentus 16/18 hopes to share the essential beauty, depth and emotional power of this music, based on a repertoire typical of the early Baroque period in France, Germany and Italy.
