Come and experience the Roumavage, a procession in honour of Saint Sixtus in Eygalières, on Tuesday 7 April, starting at 9.30 am!
The ‘Roumavage’ (procession in Provençal) is a traditional pilgrimage to Saint Sixtus, which takes place every year on Easter Tuesday.
Since the Middle Ages, the people of Eygalières have been asking the Holy Pope to ward off drought and its consequences for the village of Eygalières and the surrounding area.
The statue of the Saint was carried in procession from the parish church to the site of the chapel of Saint-Sixte.
A procession is formed, with the banner at the head, followed by tambourines and galoubets, ladies in Arlesian costume and young girls in Mireille, who precede the bust of Saint-Sixte carried by two priors. Next come the clergy, traditional carts, horsemen, worshippers and passing visitors.
On arrival at the chapel, mass is celebrated in lengo nostro, i.e. Provençal.
Roumavage schedule:
9.30am - Place de l'Église - Start of the procession to the chapel
10am - Chapelle Saint-Sixte - Mass in the open air, liturgy in Provençal, with the participation of the folk group ‘Li Cacharello’, followed by the blessing and sale of bread rolls.
The Chapelle Saint-Sixte is open on this day until around 1pm.
In the event of bad weather, the procession will not take place and mass will be held inside the Church of Saint-Laurent.
