Arles is one of 65 towns across the country where the Olympic Flame will make a stop. It will arrive in Marseille from Greece on board the ship Le Belem on 8 May 2024, then stop in Arles on 12 May before travelling across France to Paris.
Apart from Marseille, the Little Rome of the Gauls is the only town in the Bouches-du-Rhône region where the legendary Flame will be stopping. While a number of other towns applied, Arles was chosen for its rich ancient history and exceptional heritage. "The idea was to showcase the best that the country has to offer," explained Tony Estanguet.
A number of local personalities, whose names will be revealed this winter, will take it in turns to carry the flame over 6 kilometres through the old town. This will be an exceptional spotlight for Arles and its eight UNESCO World Heritage monuments. The city's sports associations will be involved in this major event, and an Olympic village will be set up on the Esplanade Charles de Gaulle on D-day.
