A dramatic historical comedy combining theater, painting, poetry and cinema, Le Mystère Ophelia plunges us into the heart of a myth that spans the centuries: that of a woman who loved passionately, and found herself imprisoned in this painting for eternity.
In the troubled waters of a masterpiece... In the 19th century, Lizzie Siddal, with her medieval beauty, posed for Millais' painting "Ophelia". There are too many similarities between the life of the character created by Shakespeare and Lizzie Siddal to be mere coincidences. These two lives, one fictional and the other real, intertwine in ways as strange as they are fateful. By entering the history of art as an imperishable muse, Lizzie Siddal has indirectly provoked her own death. Little does she know that some time later, in a bathtub, she will become, forever, a tragic Shakespearean heroine. A troubling resonance between art and reality.
Inspired by the true life of Lizzie Siddal, this show recounts the troubling ending that has haunted English art since time immemorial. What mystery lies behind a destiny so similar to that of the heroine for whom she posed? Was the painting a curse?
