Summary:
1785, on the eve of the French Revolution, during the reign of Louis XVI, a state scandal erupts at the French court. The King's Grand Chaplain, Cardinal de Rohan, was arrested outside the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles. His crime: he was accused of having bought a diamond necklace on behalf of the Queen without her consent.
According to the initial findings of the investigation, he had taken the jewel from the hands of the jewellers, forging Marie Antoinette's signature. The King, anxious to preserve the integrity of his wife and the State, had him thrown in prison. The Cardinal's trial will show that a certain Countess de la Motte was behind this resounding plot.
