The trios by Rachmaninov, Arensky and Weinberg are the works of young composers who, like Pantoum, are eager to make their mark. Based on this program, and supported by La Belle Saison, the trio will record its first CD. An absolute must!
Trio Pantoum, strings
Hugo Meder, violin
Bogeun Park, cello
Kojiro Okada, piano
RACHMANINOV | Elegiac Trio No. 1
ARENSKY | Trio no. 1
WEINBERG | Piano Trio Op. 24
The Rachmaninov and Arensky Trios have much in common: composed two years apart, in 1892 and 1894, they are the work of two composers driven by the impulses of their youth (Arensky was 33, Rachmaninov just 18). Both borrowed from Tchaikovsky; Rachmaninov even went so far as to reverse the four-note motif that opens his elder's First Piano Concerto, making it the main melody of his trio! As for Arensky, he infuses the waltz rhythm so dear to Tchaikovsky in his Scherzo, and sets up a system of cyclical melody recalls in the Finale, also inherited from his mentor.
Admired by Shostakovich, the work of Mieczysław Weinberg (1919-1996) is gradually emerging from the oblivion into which anti-Semitism and Sovietism had plunged it. Dense, spirited and enigmatic, his Piano Trio evolves from bouncy, sneering rhythms to wild, warlike outbursts. A feat of construction, to the credit of a composer only 26 years old!
