Lecture by Didier Martina-Fieschi - History-geography teacher
Shortly before the advent of writing, the urban phenomenon emerged as one of the main components of civilization and the organization of human societies. Questioning the genesis of the city therefore comes down to studying the transition from a village mode to a phenomenon of grouped dwellings, streets and public spaces, as the Near East offers us as early as the IVᵉ millennium BC. The study of ancient cities in this region, followed by an evocation of the great Mediterranean cities, will also show that defense and economy were not the only interests sought. Indeed, urbanization must also be approached from the angle of the social relationships, such as religion, politics, culture, the market and productive work, that clearly determine it. This is what this conference will attempt to present.
