Step into the fascinating world of surrealism by discovering the Maison Waldberg, a unique place that preserves the artistic legacy of two major figures of the surrealist movement: Max Ernst and Dorothea Tanning.
At the heart of Seillans, one of the most beautiful hilltop villages in Provence, the Maison Waldberg invites you on a unique artistic journey. During this guided tour organised by the Tourist Office, discover a place filled with history that celebrates the presence of two major figures of 20th-century art: Max Ernst and Dorothea Tanning.
Between 1964 and 1976, the famous couple chose the peaceful village of Seillans as their home and creative refuge. Here, Max Ernst — one of the leading representatives of the Surrealist movement and creator of the mysterious bird Loplop — found what he called his own “planet”, a place of inspiration and tranquility where he spent the final years of his life and work.
Throughout the visit, you will discover nearly one hundred lithographs, prints, aquatints and engravings by Max Ernst and Dorothea Tanning. Many of these works were created during their years in Seillans and reflect the extraordinary imagination and experimental techniques that made Ernst one of the most influential artists of modern art.
The tour also highlights the work of Stan Appenzeller (1901–1980), a painter with a remarkable and unconventional artistic journey. A friend of writer Jean Giono and artist Lucien Jacques, Appenzeller developed a deeply personal style, and a selection of his paintings is permanently exhibited in the Maison Waldberg.
The discovery continues beyond the house itself. On the nearby Place de la République — a square much loved by Max Ernst — visitors can admire his bronze sculpture “Le Génie de la Bastille”, a lasting reminder of the artist’s strong connection to the village.
Blending art, history and the timeless charm of Provence, this guided tour offers a unique opportunity to understand why this small perched village inspired some of the most fascinating artists of the 20th century.
