Provence by bike: nature, colours, & culture

In the Luberon, the Verdon, the Camargue, or the Alpilles, biking on the paths of Provence puts you up close with its charms. A chance to discover secret villages, surprising flora and fauna, and delicious local specialties.

The Luberon by bike

Hilltop villages, vines, and lavender

The Parc Naturel Régional de Luberon is a genuine paradise for cyclists with its maze of tranquil roads and lanes running between such picturesque Provencal villages as Oppède-le-Vieux, Ménerbes, Bonnieux and Lourmarin, sometimes perched on hilltops and always packed with history. The scenery is stunning too: verdant plains lined with vines, olive trees and blooming lavender fields in summer. To rent a bike and choose your dream tour, simply get in touch with the association Vélo Loisir Provence or Provence à vélo.

The Verdon by bike

Along the canyon

The Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon offers wonderful cycling opportunities. Freewheel across the vast Valensole plateau between wheat and lavender fields, stop off for a rest and stroll in the charming and typical villages of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, Allemagne-en-Provence or Comps-sur-Artuby, pedal along the banks of the majestic Lac de Sainte-Croix and admire the heady vistas over the Verdon Canyon’s turquoise waters and steep cliffs. Vélo Loisir Provence will be delighted to help you choose your bike and itinerary.

Camargue by bike

Gusty winds and wide-open spaces

A flat area, boasting vast, windswept landscapes, the Parc Naturel Régional de Camargue is simply perfect for cycling tours. It is also the arrival point of the ViaRhôna, a 815-km cycling itinerary running from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean Sea. Head to Vélo Saintois in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer to get kitted out. Take the Digue à la Mer sea dyke to soak up the coastal views and its myriad of seabirds including gulls, sterns, herons and pink flamingos.

The Alpilles by bike

A gourmet escape

Featuring a string of hills and plains, the Parc Naturel Régional des Alpilles is criss-crossed with quiet and pretty secondary roads offering delightful bicycle rides through vines, orchards, evergreen oak forests and lavender fields. Rent an electric bicycle from Sun-E-bike and head out to explore the fascinating villages of the Alpilles – like Les-Baux-de-Provence, Eygalières, and Tarascon – where you can sample delicious AOC Vallée des Baux olive oil.
