Set off the beaten track, Cornillon-Confoux and its adjacent chalky plateau are well worth a visit. The village walls overlook the banks of Etang de Berre lake down below you can admire a series of astonishing troglodyte dwellings. More surprises await you on the chalky slopes: here, between pretty dry stone walls, lie a series of spectacular dry stone huts locally known as "Bories". Formerly used as shelter for local peasants, these huts were used to stow various small items and to shelter sheep in case of very poor weather. The same dry stone technique was even used to make hives: one of them – a magnificent stone "wall" for bees – forms yet another of the highlights of this unusual and fascinating itinerary.
