The Popes' walk

Leaving from the Place du Palais des Papes, plunge immediately into Avignon's history with the majestic Palais des Papes (1), the world's largest Gothic palace, followed by the Basilica of Notre-Dame des Doms (2), which dominates the city. Just a stone's throw away, the Petit Palais-Louvre en Avignon museum (3) and the elegant Hôtel des Monnaies (4) complete this exceptional ensemble. Continue your tour down Rue Peyrolerie (5), one of the most typical streets in the historic center, before reaching Place de l'Amirande. Here you'll discover La Mirande (6), a superb town house facing the Saint-Laurent tower. The itinerary then takes you to a more confidential spot, the Verger Urbain V (7), a veritable parenthesis of greenery in the heart of the city, then on to the Manutention district (8), today bustling with cultural and leisure spaces. Continue on to the Chapelle des Pénitents Noirs (9), before reaching one of Avignon's most emblematic monuments: the world-famous Pont Saint-Bénezet (10). From the ramparts, enjoy superb views of the Rhône and Villeneuve-lez-Avignon. End your stroll in the quartier de la Balance (11), one of Avignon's oldest streets, before returning to the Place du Palais des Papes. Tip: extend your experience by taking the free river shuttle from the foot of the Rocher des Doms to the Barthelasse island, a vast natural area offering a breathtaking view of the ramparts and monuments.
