The Coopaport aquaculture cooperative brings together fish merchants and small businesses specializing in shellfish farming. Come to the Canal Saint-Antoine to discover this traditional activity that has been part of the local landscape for generations.
Anse de Carteau is located in the open sea in the Gulf of Fos-sur-Mer. This shellfish-growing area was started by 4 pioneers in 1978, and was soon managed by a cooperative. In 1981, COOPAPORT in Port Saint Louis du Rhône provided 104 mussel tables (50 m x 15 m) with space for 1,600 ropes, shared by just over 40 producers.
Annual production therefore varies between 2,500 and 3,000 tons of mussels. The COOPAPORT cooperative produces only mussels, which it markets under 5 different names to differentiate production: sweet mussels when the wind is westerly, saltier mussels when the Mistral blows. These include "Belle de Carteau", "Royale de Carteau", "Camarguaise", "Martiguaise" and "Marine de Carteau". In 2014, the cooperative shifted up a gear with the good results of trials carried out on oyster production. While provisional authorization was given for marketing during the festive season, the final authorizations are due to be issued by the authorities at the end of the 1st quarter of 2015.
