La Grave ski resort

The resort of La Grave – La Meije welcomes you all year round. La Grave is located 1,525 meters above sea level, in the Oisans massif, between “les 2 Alpes” and Serre Chevalier, at the gates of the Écrins massif, in the Hautes Alpes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. Visit this lovely stone-house village. In winter, enjoy skiing on the vast off-piste area and in summer admire the breathtaking panorama during a hike. From the village of La Grave, you can also reach the surrounding villages such as Villar d’Arène, Le Chazelet or the Lautaret Col.

Winter in La Grave: freeriding in the Vallons de la Meije

The domain of La Grave – La Meije offers a vast off-piste area for experienced skiers. The cable car will take you to the summit located at 3,200 meters of altitude. Once at the top, you will enjoy the view of the glacial expanses, snow fields and forests where you will be able to hike. Admire a wild and unspoiled natural landscape. You can also take the ski lift to reach the Dôme de la Lauze, located at 3,560 meters of altitude, and Les 2 Alpes.

La Grave is unlike the other ski resorts. The site is not secured, there are no secured and marked slopes. You will have to be careful and take precautions before you go on an off-piste skiing session. With the Chamonix Valley, La Grave resort is one of the best freeride spots in France and in Europe. As there are no marked slopes in the Vallons de La Meije, beginners should not ski there.

Summer in La Grave: hiking and visiting

In summer, the resort of La Grave welcomes you to discover its wonderful landscapes during a hike or a mountain bike ride. The cable car will take you to the Ruillans Col located at 3,211 meters of altitude and to the Girose glacier. Admire a panorama made of glaciers and peaks. At the top of the mountain, you will find a mountain restaurant as well as viewpoints indicators to enjoy the panorama even more. If you are a sportsperson, you can let yourself be tempted by the discovery of the crevasses of the glacier with a mountain professional. There are 2 stops during the cable car ascent. One stop will take you to the meadows where you can have a nice picnic with friends or family or walk around the Puy Vachier lake or to the Chancel refuge.

In the summer season only, you can visit the ice cave and discover its sculptures. In winter, it is buried under the snow and therefore inaccessible. It is located at the arrival of the cable car of Glaciers de la Meije. Before you get there, check out its opening dates. This site is, indeed, strongly impacted by natural phenomena.

Discover the gems of La Grave village all year round

La Grave village belongs to the Écrins National Park. It has been classified among the most beautiful villages in France. With its authentic spirit, it is unlike the other touristic ski resorts. It is located at the base of the Meije Massif, in a preserved environment. Discover its narrow streets and its stone houses, its church, Notre Dame de l’Assomption, and its Pénitents Blancs chapel. The presence of “trabuc”, alleys that link the houses together, is due to the fact that it used to be surrounded by a fortified enclosure.

The hamlets of Les Terrasses, Le Chazelet, Ventelon or Les Hières are not far from La Grave. You can get there through different itineraries meandering through the mountains where you will see cows and sheeps. On your way through the country of the Meije, do not miss the garden of Lautaret, located at the Lautaret Col, and stop at the lake of Pontet in Villar d’Arène or at the lake of Goléon in La Grave. You can also go to the Écrins National Park, the starting point for many hikes.
