Heritage and monuments

The small town of Castellane is renowned for its heritage. The historic centre of Castellane attracts visitors with its lively streets, old houses, shops and restaurants.

Built in the Middle Ages, the Chapelle Notre Dame-du-Roc overlooks the town of Castellane and the Verdon valley from its vertiginous rocky promontory. The present building was rebuilt in the 19th century in a sober and elegant architectural style. The chapel can be reached on foot from the centre of Castellane, after a walk of about 30 minutes. The view from the terrace is breathtaking and justifies the effort to reach the Notre Dame du Roc chapel.

7 kilometres south of Castellane, in the hamlet of Robion, you can also admire the Chapelle Saint-Thyrse de Robion.

The lake of Castillon

Between Castellane and Saint-André-les-Alpes, the lake of Castillon offers sublime landscapes in the heart of the Verdon Regional Natural Park.you want to rent a sailboat, a boat or a kayak? Do you simply want to swim in pure, fresh water? The lake of Castillon offers a wide selection of nautical activities.

Situated at an altitude of almost 900 m, this lake allows you to enjoy the freshness and numerous outdoor activities under the sun of Haute-Provence.

The Verdon Natural Park

Between the Var and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, the Parc du Verdon is home to a wide variety of landscapes with mountains, hills, wild canyons, forests and agricultural valleys. Nature also offers a wide variety of activities to the visitors : hiking, cycling, horse riding, canyoning, paragliding, climbing, via ferrata, tree climbing… You can also set off to discover a built heritage of sober beauty: windmills, oil mills, grain mills, oppidums, churches, oratories, chapels? The Haute-Provence Geological Reserve

The reserve is an open-air book that traces the evolution of life. Various sites developed for tourism allow you to discover many geological treasures: fossils of ammonites (marine molluscs whose shape is reminiscent of snails), sirenians (marine mammals), ichthyosaurs … This area is classified and protected by Unesco.

You can visit the Musée Promenade in Digne-les-Bains, to learn more about the geological past of the region.
