The Sainte-Baume Massif

Between Toulon and Marseille, the Sainte-Baume massif culminates at an altitude of more than 1000 meters. Hikers and cycling enthusiasts will be able to discover numerous itineraries of all levels within the massif. This natural site conceals exceptional flora and fauna, with a relict forest made up mainly of beech trees. La Sainte-Baume is a land of spirituality, Christian but also pagan. Numerous vestiges testify to this. The Basilica of Saint-Maximin and the Grotto of Sainte-Baume have preserved the relics of Mary Magdalene for centuries. At the foot of the massif, the town of Saint-Maximin is dominated by a basilica that is remarkable in many ways. During your walks in the Park, you may come across dry-stone constructions that are partly buried. These are coolers, which were used to produce from the 17th to the 19th century the ice loaves intended for the bourgeoisie of Toulon, Aix-en-Provence or Marseille.
