The Sainte-Baume National Park
Straddling the Var and the Bouches-du-Rhône, the Sainte-Baume massif reaches an altitude of more than 1150 meters, at the signal of the Béguines. Hiking and cycling enthusiasts are in love with its landscapes. This natural site has an exceptional flora and fauna, with a large number of bird species such as the spotted woodpecker, the Tengmalm’s owl, the grey flycatcher, the orpheus warbler, Bonelli’s eagle, the Jean-le-blanc circaet, the Great Horned Owl, the European roller, the little owl, the dipper owl… The Sainte Baume is also home to many remarkable buildings. Mary Magdalene, a biblical figure, is said to have spent the last years of her life praying in a cave near the summit, transformed into a church and sanctuary. The forest at the foot of the sanctuary is presented as magical by a Roman author, Lucain, in La Pharsale. As for the ice-boxes, they bear witness to a time when freezers did not exist: ice was produced in winter in the Massif, which was then delivered to Marseille, Toulon or Aix-en-Provence.
