The Sainte-Baume National Park
Between the Bouches-du-Rhône and the Var, the Sainte-Baume massif peaks at over 1150 meters above sea level, at the signal of the Béguines. Lovers of nature activities are in love with its landscapes. The fauna and flora are remarkable, with numerous animal species: Tengmalm’s owl, badger, orpheus warbler, Bonelli’s eagle, Jean-le-blanc circaète, European rollier, rock mound… Buildings are a reminder of human activity in the Massif. The Basilica of Saint-Maximin and the Grotte de la Sainte-Baume have preserved the relics of Mary Magdalene for centuries. The town of Saint-Maximin is famous for its monumental basilica. The town is also a major tourist destination. The iceboxes are a relic of the time when refrigerators did not exist: ice was produced in winter in the Massif de la Sainte-Baume, which was then transported to Aix-en-Provence, Toulon or Marseille.
