The Sainte-Baume National Park
Between Toulon and Marseille, the Sainte-Baume massif culminates at an altitude of more than 1150 meters, at the signal of the Béguines. The massif is an incredible playground for the practice of natural leisure activities: hiking, cycling, horse riding, paragliding… This natural site has a remarkable fauna and flora, with many species of birds such as the Tengmalm’s owl, the grey flycatcher, the Bonelli’s eagle, the Jean-le-blanc circaète, the European roller, the Cincle plongeur… The Sainte Baume is also home to many remarkable buildings. Marie-Madeleine, a character from the Gospels, is said to have spent many years meditating in a cave near the summit, transformed into a troglodyte. The town of Saint-Maximin, with its monumental basilica, is also a major tourist attraction. As for the iceboxes, they are a vestige of the time when refrigerators did not exist: ice was produced in winter, which was then transported by mule to the major cities of Provence.
