In the heart of the Luberon Regional Natural Park, in the charming village of Cabrières d’Avignon, the Lavender Museum honors a plant, a tradition and a culture emblematic of Provence. Set off to discover the real lavender!
Meet the lavender growers
Your visit to the Lavender Museum in Luberon will allow you to discover all the secrets of this highly prized aromatic plant. You will learn how to differentiate the different botanical varieties and to distinguish between the wild lavenders of Provence and the hybrids, or lavandins. You will learn more about the privileged terroir of lavender and the optimal conditions for growing it.
The screening of a documentary movie allows you to discover the entire process of harvesting, from cutting to distillation, which allows the precious essential oil to be extracted.
The exhibition room presents pieces of great value, allowing visitors to become familiar with an ancestral know-how. From the 16th century to the present day, the evolution of techniques and needs is presented with a concrete and playful approach.
A sensory experience
The visit concludes with a sensory experience: visitors can smell and test the AOP essential oil of lavender from Haute Provence and discover organic cosmetics and niche perfumes. The museum advisors will inform you about current manufacturing methods, the uses and virtues of fine lavender and other Provençal plants. An herbal tea tasting session is also waiting for you, if you wish, in the museum store.
Events and activities
In summer, visitors to the Luberon can watch the distillation in a still that is more than a century old, installed in the gardens of the Lavender Museum.
You can also enjoy numerous activities throughout the year, according to the calendar. For example, the theme of love is in the spotlight in February, the month of Valentine’s Day. Mother’s Day can also be the subject of a dedicated animation, while Heritage Days are celebrated in September.
From the end of May to mid-August, the lavender field is in bloom. These dates may vary according to the weather conditions.
