Description
Built solidly on the rock, overlooking the city, it is visible from all directions and serves as an unmissable landmark. The count’s castle is currently undergoing renovation: please check for information on access conditions and closure periods for the surrounding area.
Originally a wooden tower erected in 1185 to assert the power of Raymond VI, Count of Toulouse and lord of the Comtat Venaissin, it was transformed in the 13th century into a fortified building comprising three main buildings and a square keep surrounding an inner courtyard. In 1274, it became a pontifical possession until 1791.
