Description
For 2 weeks, on the occasion of the Mediterranean Season, Studio Fotokino presents productions resulting from research carried out since last year in partnership with The Mothership (Tangiers, Morocco).
Our recent research into dye plants, fueled by a partnership with The Mothership in Tangier, naturally led us to Moroccan craftsmanship. During several trips to Morocco in 2025 and 2026, we discovered plants and natural additives that we now use, along with those available in France, to make paints and screen printing inks.
As we explored these traditional products, we met Hamza Cherif D'Ouezzan, who shared with us his experience at Anou, a cooperative of over 600 artisans across Morocco. Made up mainly of women from rural backgrounds, this structure enables its members to bypass intermediaries and regain control of their production. This includes direct online sales, peer-to-peer training and integration of the upstream and downstream value chains. We were particularly interested in their relationship with vegetable dyeing, a practice already identified on their platform, and which our meeting enabled us to better situate within the Moroccan artisanal field.
As part of a program devised for the Saison Méditerranée, we are inviting Hamza Cherif D'Ouezzan to Marseille to continue the dialogue and exchange of practices. Johanne Dendleux, from the Institut pour les Savoir-Faire Français, will also join the discussion. Under the aegis of the French Ministry of Culture, this institute works to promote the transmission and development of arts and crafts and living heritage.
In addition to their respective experiences within these structures, each has developed expertise over the years that will be put into perspective during this conference. We believe it is essential to cross-reference these two perspectives, each nourished by its own history, in order to think about today's crafts.
