Description
En attendant le futur recreates the testimonies of the 270 victims of the July 14, 2016 attack. It reveals to the public the intimacy of the courtroom and teaches us about humanity's resilience in the face of the worst trials.
This text was written from the court notes of a victims' lawyer during the trial of the attack on July 14, 2016, when the terrorist at the wheel of a ram-truck zigzagging along the Promenade des Anglais on the evening of the fireworks killed 86 people in a few minutes and injured 458 others. The victims included many children, families, young people and holidaymakers... a total of 2,750 people were admitted as civil parties. During the 4-month trial and the 3-month appeal, 270 testimonies were given in the trial and as many in the appeal. Hundreds of faces, stories and tears were shed in the Assize Court. Nothing seemed to be able to hold back the words spoken by the victims as they gave their testimony.
En attendant le futur was born first and foremost out of the need to capture this oral tradition, destined to be lost, and to give it a posterity by restoring it to the victims. The text also aims to make this voice heard by the public. Terrorists strike indiscriminately, without choosing their victims: for them, the important thing is the shockwave that can frighten an entire nation. We could all be hit by terrorism, and we owe the victims our utmost compassion. In the meantime, the future is written solely from the victims' point of view. It is exclusively their feelings and their journey that is described. The words used are theirs, and were spoken in the courtroom. No facts are invented, only anonymization. In 2026, it will be 10 years since the events took place. This text is entirely dedicated to the victims.
