This exhibition, organised by the Fondation Maréchal de Lattre and the Var section of the Union Nationale des Combattants, pays tribute to Marshal de Lattre and the soldiers of the First French Army, which became known as the ‘Rhine and Danube’.

The exhibition entitled ‘General de Lattre de Tassigny and the First French Army, the alchemy of victory’ is accompanied by a photo exhibition entitled ‘The Landing at Sainte-Maxime through the eyes of war photographers’ by Thierry de Villeneuve la Colette.

From 17 to 30 June, the Fondation Maréchal de Lattre (a non-profit-making foundation whose honorary committee is chaired by the President of the French Senate) is kindly providing the town of Sainte-Maxime with a 21-panel exhibition entitled ‘General de Lattre and the First French Army, the alchemy of victory, 1944-1945’.

In August 1944, the 1st Army, still known as Army B, landed in Provence. Around 255,000 men, plus 5,000 female auxiliaries, landed in the months following the invasion. This army was made up of 82% soldiers from units of the Armée d'Afrique, 10% black Africans and 8% French nationals.

In September 1944, Army B officially became the 1st Army. It was strengthened by the merger with the Forces françaises de l'intérieur (FFI), officially decided by decree on 23 September 1942. It was nicknamed Rhine and Danube because of its victories on the Rhine and Danube between 31 March and 26 April 1945.

> Exhibition organised in partnership with the Var UNC.

> Opening: Monday 17 June at 7pm
