When the Second World War broke out, Stéphane Grappelli was on tour with the Quintette du Hot Club de France. On 3 September, when the sirens went off, Django panicked and immediately returned to France, but Stéphane, who was ill, was stranded in London. He spent the war in England, playing with pianist George Shearing. He developed his career considerably there, honing and refining his technique, style and musicality, and composing a great deal.
