The railways are the most important human achievement of the 19th century. The Hautes-Alpes, despite a geographical context that was not very conducive to communications, was served by the railways at the dawn of the 20th century under the aegis of the Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée (PLM): the train arrived at Briançon station on 15 September 1884.
