Description
For his new opera, composer Régis Campo revisits Andersen’s famous fairy tale and reveals its modern relevance: beyond the story’s terrible cruelty, he speaks to us here of love and of embracing others in their differences.
On the eve of a major decision, a teenage girl falls asleep. In her dream, she hears the voice of the Little Mermaid—who, like her, is about to commit an irreversible act—and sees her bedroom become a stage for endless possibilities: furniture and light transform, revealing a mysterious underwater world, before her harrowing encounter with the sea-spider witch and her discovery of the human world. Magical and enchanting, this opera is a wonderful ode to love, mutual support, and the rejection of violence.
