Theatrical performance of Molière's "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme", by the Arles-based company Les Panathénées. Adapted and directed by Jérôme JEAN,

Le Bourgeois gentilhomme is a play written by Molière in 1670. It tells the story of Monsieur Jourdain, a bourgeois who aspires to become a gentleman. His desire to rise socially pushes him to acquire the manners and customs of people of quality, but he often finds himself in ridiculous situations. The play is a social satire denouncing the dangers of vanity. The staging takes up the codes of the period, in a baroque universe devoid of scenery, but with Louis XIV-style costumes. Imaginary, modern characters punctuate the scenes with zany antics and delirium of all kinds. Costumes created by Grun de Sau, partly funded by the Arles Lions Club.
