Le triomphe d'Arlequin

The action takes place in an imaginary Venice, home to an elderly French grocer, Pantalone, who wants to profit from his daughter's marriage to make himself rich. A vain captain attempts to kidnap the beautiful Fiordalise, Pantalone's daughter, with the help of the ubiquitous Harlequin. The latter turns out to be the beautiful Gelsomina, who, like Viola in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, has disguised herself as a servant for love. The courtesan Isabella, meanwhile, falls in love with Captain Spaventa's brother, the notorious Captain Rodomonte, and flees disguised as a man to follow him. Masks, coups de théâtre, lazzi, dances, songs and pantomimes characterize this theatrical opera, rooted in the purest tradition of Commedia dell'Arte.
