“You must know, my dear, that Marseille is the first city in France to have understood Beethoven’s great works. It is five years ahead of Paris in this regard.” Who said that? Hector Berlioz. If the composer of the Symphonie fantastique said so, who are we to doubt it!
He adds another layer: “Beethoven’s late quartets were already being played and adored in Marseille when we were still treating the sublime author of these extraordinary compositions as a madman.” ” Alexis Joseph Rostand, judge, cellist, and mayor of Marseille, had in fact formed a string quartet with his brothers, and they adored this music.
For the Beethoven bicentennial, we have invited the excellent Girard Quartet, a large family of musicians from Avignon, the great-nephews of the writer René Girard. Having performed the complete works several times, they have this music in their blood.
