Description

The Thalie Collection is hosting a new exhibition of textile artworks at its summer venue in Arles.
A summer exhibition by the Thalie Collection in dialogue with ALEOR Design in Arles. The Thalie Collection presents a new exhibition dedicated to textiles, in dialogue with designer Leo Orta’s residency in the Camargue and the research of the Brussels-based studio ALEOR, which specializes in bio-based design. Through approaches that blend collection, observation, and experimentation, art and design become tools for transmitting, archiving, and revitalizing local craftsmanship. In the Camargue, Leo Orta explores, in particular, the heritage of basketry and conceives objects that bridge local traditions and contemporary perspectives. Textiles emerge as a means of narrating landscapes, memories, and the bonds that unite us with the living world. The exhibition brings together artists and designers whose practices examine materials, gestures, and the narratives they convey. Diana Scherer reveals the invisible architectures of roots; Rosana Escobar develops projects rooted in natural fibers and local communities; while Elisa Peroi, Simone Pheulpin, and Amina Agueznay explore textiles as a sensitive language of the landscape. From weaving to embroidery, from straw marquetry to basketry, the works on display demonstrate textiles’ capacity to preserve, transmit, and transform stories. Straddling memory, fiction, and social engagement, they chart new ways of inhabiting the world and rethinking our relationship to territories. The exhibition brings together works by Majd Abdel Hamid, Caroline Achaintre, Amina Agueznay, Edith Dekyndt, Sheila Hicks, Eva Jospin, Junko Oki, Lucy & Jorge Orta, Simone Pheulpin, Kiki Smith, Georges Tony Stoll, Rosana Escobar, Diana Scherer, as well as works by Leo Orta created during his residency in the Camargue. Public Program: - “Inhabiting the Material,” a conversation between Sophie Dries and Leo Orta, moderated by Alexia Venot. July 8 at 5 p.m. Admission is free, subject to availability. - Guided tours will be offered every Wednesday and Saturday at 5 p.m., except during the professional week of the Rencontres de la Photographie (reservations required).
