Description
In Nissart, charafi means an object of little value. For over a century, flea markets in various parts of Nice have been selling second-hand objects, often the result of home clearances or removals.
But are we really sure that all this junk is worthless?
Antique dealers and collectors unearth their treasures here. And what about heritage enthusiasts?
Utensils, cutlery, clothes, bottles or boxes: these are all objects that carry a history. Don't they bear witness to a territory, a way of life? When we take the time to observe them, these pieces shed light on entire fragments of Nice's history.
Like all collections, this one is the result of chance: chance finds, chance emotions, chance encounters. And each object invites us to question the very notion of a masterpiece: rarity or abundance, sacred or profane, contemplation or use?
This exhibition paves the way for new themes to deepen our knowledge of Nice. Let's go bargain hunting!
The exhibition route
Nice's flea market from A to Z.
The "Trésors, charafi et quoi encore?" exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the history of Nice, exploring the world of secondhand goods like a scrapbook leafing through a collection of objects.
The items on display have been unearthed in the antiques district, at the Puces de Nice and at the Cours Saleya flea market.
From the fields of fashion, crafts, industry, agriculture and architecture, they reveal little-known aspects of Nice's heritage.
In this way, they bear witness to their ability to tell the story of an era and a territory.
After an introduction devoted to the history of flea markets, the exhibition is organized around seven sections:
