Guided tour of the Communication Y and Fort Dauphin with guides from Briançon's Heritage Department.
On this 2-in-1 tour, you can visit two unusual 18th-century structures that are rarely open to the public. Unique in France, the Y communication is a multi-purpose structure. Fort Dauphin will also open its doors for the occasion. Just a few hundred metres from the Communication Y, Fort Dauphin was designed as the first line of defence against the enemy. It acted as an outpost for Briançon and the fortified barrier.

2 ways of getting to Communication Y:
-By car: From the Heritage Department, Cité Vauban, take avenue Baldenberger, then left to join avenue de la Libération then avenue de la République. At the bottom of the hill, at the first roundabout, go straight ahead and at the next roundabout, turn left into Avenue du Général de Gaulle. At the next roundabout, turn left and left again at the end of the road, then immediately right at the roundabout towards the Col d'Izoard. Drive through the hamlet of Fontchristiane. A few hundred metres after the exit sign for the hamlet, take the road on the left, in the bend just before the waste centre.
Caution: reduced visibility, dangerous crossing. Continue on the road up through the fortifications. You will pass the entrance to Communication Y, where you can park nearby.
- On foot: From the upper town, take the path leading from the Asfeld bridge. Allow 1 hour's walk.
The guide reserves the right to cancel or interrupt any tour if necessary for the safety of visitors.
The fort has no water or public toilets. Please bring suitable mountain clothing and footwear.
