Description

Guided tour of the Communication Y and Fort Dauphin with guides from Briançon's Heritage Department.
This 2-in-1 tour will allow you to visit two unusual 18th-century fortifications that are rarely open to the public. Unique in France, the Communication Y is a multi-purpose structure. Next, Fort Dauphin will open its doors to you for the occasion. Just a few hundred metres from the Communication Y, Fort Dauphin was designed as the first line of defence against the enemy. It served as an outpost watching over Briançon and the fortified barrier. Duration: 3 hours Please wear suitable walking shoes, bring water and wear clothing that covers your skin. Meeting point: Near the car park in front of Communication Y, Font-Christiane To ensure the tour starts on time, please allow plenty of time for your journey and parking Two ways to get to Communication Y: -By car: From the Heritage Department, Cité Vauban, take Avenue Baldenberger, then turn left onto Avenue de la Libération, followed by Avenue de la République. At the very bottom, at the first roundabout, go straight on and at the next one, turn left onto Avenue du Général de Gaulle. At the next roundabout, turn left and left again at the end of the street, then immediately right at the roundabout towards the Col d’Izoard. Pass through the hamlet of Fontchristiane. A few hundred metres after the sign marking the exit from the hamlet, take the road on the left, at the bend just before the recycling centre. Caution: reduced visibility, dangerous junction. Continue along the road which climbs through the fortifications. You will pass the entrance to Communication Y; you can park nearby. -On foot: From the upper town, via the path leading from the Asfeld Bridge, allow 1 hour’s walk. The guide reserves the right to cancel or interrupt any tour if necessary for the safety of visitors. The fort has no water or public toilets. Please bring suitable mountain clothing and footwear.
