Description
Guided tour of Fort Dauphin and Fort des Trois Têtes with Briançon's Heritage Department guide-lecturers.
This 2-in-1 tour will take you inside Fort Dauphin. A small fort built in the 18th century, Fort Dauphin follows the contours of the plateau on which it stands. It was designed to house around a hundred men and a stock of gunpowder. The tour will continue inside the immense Fort des Trois Têtes, a major structure within Briançon’s fortified belt. The unique history of these fortifications during the Second World War will also be discussed.
Duration: 3 hours
Meeting point: shooting range car park
To ensure the tour starts on time, please allow plenty of time for your journey and parking
Two ways to reach the fort’s shooting range:
By car: From the Heritage Office (Cité Vauban), take Avenue Baldenberger, then turn left onto Avenue de la Libération, followed by Avenue de la République. At the very bottom, at the first roundabout, go straight on; at the next one, turn left onto Avenue du Général de Gaulle. At the next roundabout, turn left and left again at the end of the street, then immediately right at the roundabout towards the Col d’Izoard. Pass through the hamlet of Fontchristiane. A few hundred metres after the sign marking the exit from the hamlet, take the road on the left, at the bend just before the recycling centre.
Caution: reduced visibility, dangerous junction. Continue along the road which climbs through the fortifications. Head for the firing range via a platform used as a car park, where there is a long concrete and timber barracks.
On foot: from the upper town, via the path leading from the Asfeld Bridge, allow 45 minutes for the climb.
Please wear suitable walking shoes, bring water and wear clothing that covers your skin.
