Description
As part of the 2026 Rencontres d’Arles OFF, the European Center for Visual Arts presents Zhang Lanpo’s solo exhibition: *The Epic of the Giant*. A rare body of work born of silence, memory, and a profoundly unique visual imagination.
This is not a reference. It is an apparition. Having lived in seclusion for decades in a mountain village in China, far from the art world and the public eye, Zhang Lanpo has developed a radical body of work born of silence and time. A former valedictorian of the Academy of Fine Arts, he chose obscurity over a career. *The Epic of the Giant* emerges from this asceticism. A singular image, hollowed out like a mental cavity, where the strata of a visual civilization in ruins seem to have settled. Frames, signs, fragments: everything proliferates there, like the remnants of a world saturated with images. Without ever engaging with European tradition, Zhang Lanpo nevertheless brings forth the figure of the giant—not as a reference, but as a unsettling coincidence. The same form, across the centuries, to say something different about the world. The image is no longer something to be looked at. It engulfs.
