          Avignon in the 19th century

          Until the French Revolution, Avignon and the Comtat Venaissin were papal territories. In 1791, they reunited with the kingdom of France and the city became the capital of the department of Vaucluse in 1793. After the fall of the First Empire in 1815, Avignon experienced a phase of urban growth which forced it to develop peripheral spaces to its medieval ramparts. The arrival of the railway in 1849, which united the city with Marseille, brought Avignon into modernity.  Follow your guide through the Haussmannian neighborhood, between the Place de l’Horloge and Avignon train station, to understand the sudden transformation of this religious city into a forward-looking provincial town.
