On your way: landscapes and relief

Leave Fos, crossing the saltmarsh on your way. After walking along part of the Chemin du Canal du Roy, head along the Canal de Fos in Port-de-Bouc. This classic Provence hiking trail invites your spirit to wander, charmed by the delights of the South… Next, you’ll arrive at Pointe de Vella. Stop off at Plage des Galets beach to get your strength back and admire Etang de Berre lake, just in front of you. You’ll then take the GR® de Pays 2013 Marseille Provence Métropole long-distance trail to Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Marins, perched on a rocky outcrop. Saint Mary Magdalene no doubt stopped here to rest too. Behold the town of Martigues before you! Cross the Chenal de Caronte to reach the heart of this waterside town.

Must-see sights : keep your eyes peeled

In addition to its gorgeous natural decor, your tour of Martigues unveils a rich religious heritage inviting meditation and prayer. As you roam around this ancient Provencal town, stop off to visit the Eglise Sainte-Marie-Madeleine , erected in 1680 in the Quartier de l’Île quarter. The church boasts a remarkable façade featuring a sculpture of the Virgin and Child. Don’t miss a visit to Notre-Dame-des-Marins too, if your legs don’t mind the climb. A Christian place of pilgrimage, the chapel is dedicated to sailors and features a magnificent collection of votives and silver statues of the Virgin Mary.

Where to sleep?

Located near the marina, the Hôtel Le Grand Canal offers simple rooms and practical, comfy studios. The Jonquières quarter, just next to the sea and Etang de Berre lake, is reputed for its tranquillity. You’ll also appreciate the peace and quiet of the Résidence La Cigalière and its 25 m² studio with delightful views. La Tartanne features agreeable guest rooms and is situated next to Plage de Ferrières beach – the promise of a delicious night before getting back on the road, refreshed and ready to continue your tour of Provence.
