Freissinières in summer: mountain activities galore

Freissinières is a genuine summer paradise for outdoor sports fans. Sheltered behind a glacier, the valley offers a vast variety of mountainscapes just waiting to be explored. Grab your rope and harness and snake your way up the local climbingroutes for a whole new angle on Ecrins National Park. You can also opt for the many hiking trails criss-crossing wild natural scenery. A resort of many faces

The village of Freissinières comprises no less than 13 hamlets spread out on a 600-metre incline along river Biaysse. Formerly a refuge, the valley provided shelter for the Vaud Resistance – members of a Protestant religious movement – in the 13th century. Today, only the village of Dormillouse is still inhabited: a little cocoon tucked in Ecrins National Park, home to an old bread oven, mill, temple and the house of Félix Neff, where France’s first teacher-training school opened in 1825. If you want to visit this historic village it will take you about 45 minutes – but you can only get there on foot, so make sure you stock up on snacks from the local markets! From mountain farms to orchards, this fertile soil aided and abetted by the talented hand of man has given birth to many tasty specialities – charcuterie, cheeses and delicious honey desserts – to slip into your bag.
