The Sainte-Baume Massif

Located on the border between Bouches-du-Rhône and Var, the Sainte-Baume massif soars to more than 1150 meters above sea level, marked by the Béguines peak. This massif offers an incredible range of outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, cycling, horseback riding, paragliding, and climbing. The region boasts a remarkable diversity of wildlife and flora, home to various species such as Tengmalm’s owl, roe deer, Orrhen’s warbler, grey flycatcher, Bonelli’s eagle, little scops owl, blue monticole, rock monticole, and proyer bunting.

The Sainte-Baume holds a deep spiritual significance, first as a pagan and later a Christian site, reflected in its historical heritage. The sanctuary of Sainte-Baume and the basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Saint-Maximin house the relics of Mary Magdalene. In the northern part of the massif, Saint-Maximin boasts an exceptional basilica with its own unique charm. Additionally, the old ice boxes serve as remnants from a time when refrigeration technology didn’t exist. Ice was produced during the winter months and transported to Marseille, Toulon, or Aix-en-Provence, showcasing the area’s historical ingenuity.
