The Sainte-Baume Massif

Straddling the Bouches-du-Rhône and the Var, the Sainte-Baume massif rises to over 1150 meters above sea level, at the signal of the Béguines. The massif is an incredible playground for the practice of outdoor leisure activities: hiking, cycling, horse riding, paragliding, climbing? The fauna and flora are remarkable, with numerous animal species: Tengmalm’s owl, roe deer, Orrhen’s warbler, grey flycatcher, Bonelli’s eagle, little scops owl, blue monticole, rock monticole, proyer bunting… The Sainte-Baume is a land of spirituality, pagan then Christian. The heritage bears witness to this. The sanctuary of the Sainte-Baume and the basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine of Saint-Maximin welcome the relics of Marie-Madeleine. To the north of the massif, Saint-Maximin shelters an incredible basilica in many ways. As for the old ice boxes, they are a vestige of the time when freezers did not exist: ice was produced in winter, and then delivered to Marseille, Toulon or Aix-en-Provence.
