The Sainte-Baume Massif
Between the Var and the Bouches-du-Rhône, the Sainte-Baume massif rises to more than 1148 meters. The massif is a great playground for outdoor leisure activities: hiking, mountain biking, cycling, horse riding, paragliding, climbing… The fauna and flora are remarkable, with a relic forest made up of beech trees. The pagan then Christian spirituality is part of the history of the Sainte-Baume. The patrimony bears witness to this. Mary Magdalene, a biblical character, is said to have spent the last years of her life meditating and praying in a cave near the summit, transformed into a church and sanctuary. To the north of the massif, the town of Saint-Maximin is dominated by a basilica which is incredible in many ways. During your walks in the park, you will sometimes come across partially buried cylindrical constructions. These coolers produced the ice loaves for the wealthy inhabitants of Aix-en-Provence, Toulon or Marseille.
