Best Street Food in Marseille

We often stumble across them by chance, then eagerly await them every week! They add a surprising twist to our lunches on the hop and are the perfect trump card if you fancy a day off from cooking… Food trucks are making their mark around every corner in the city, bringing with them reinvented flavours topped with a great street food vibe.

Marseille, the birthplace of the pizza truck

The ancestor of the food truck

Food trucks weren’t born yesterday and neither were pizzas! Marseille was the first place to sell pizzas in France, after many Italians emigrated to the city in the Thirties. And one thing is certain, the people of Marseille absolutely love them! In 1962 a very creative (and even visionary) foodie called Jean Méritan came up with the idea of creating a travelling pizza shop, inspired by a stay in Spain. He used a van and trailer, on which he installed a wood stove. A novel concept indeed: in fact, passers-by initially thought it was a tarring machine, but it soon met with success! After that, pizza trucks sprang up all over Marseille and France, and there are no less than 6,000 of them today. Other food trucks soon appeared in their wake, all vying for the most original culinary feats…

Takeaway pasta

Homemade travelling ravioli

How about producing homemade ravioli using regional produce, cooked in a traditional mould under the gaze of hungry punters? Former chemist Daniel Luperini came up with this genius idea in 2008 and hasn’t looked back since. Every day, Daniel travels around Marseille and its vicinity making various types of ravioli in his food truck L’Emporte-pâtes, with a great choice of fillings concocted in collaboration with chefs from the Gourméditerranée association. Brousse or Provencal beef stew? Just take your pick! You can savour them hot on site or cook them at home.

Alexandre Mazzia’s food truck “Michel”

Chef’s cuisine on the hop

Fast, affordable food worthy of Marseille’s finest restaurants made by a Michelin three-star chef? Yep, it’s absolutely possible and its called “Michel“! A tribute to his maternal grandfather, a fishermen from Ile de Ré, you’ll find the “Michel” food truck run by famous chef Alexandre Mazzia – ranked among the top 25 most influential food industry people by the magazine GQ – parked in Rue Rocca (Marseille 8th arrondissement), opposite Alexandre Mazzia’s gastronomic eatery. This trendy truck features dishes(between €10 and €19) concocted with local, seasonal produce fresh from the market. Don’t miss the mouth-watering peashell tempuras dipped in a seaweed bearnaise sauce… And if you’ve got a sweet tooth, you’re sure to succumb to the delicious cakes and pastries !

La Guinguette Solaire du Présage

Solar power and local produce on the menu

If you’re seeking something to eat in Marseille topped with a novel experience with family or friends, look no more! La Guinguette Solaire du Présage is an eco-friendly food truck specialized in local produce cooked using a solar-powered oven. And who’s behind this brilliant idea? A large and talented team, headed up by chef Pierre-André Aubert, a former engineer passionate about local flavours and committed to minimizing his carbon footprint. The concept is simple: the food truck is installed inthe Tiers-Lab des Transitions, in the 4th arrondissement. A mirror placed all around reflects the lights and heats up an iron plate with the necessary power to heat the oven. And that’s not all: a restaurant project operating on the same principle is also under way. An environmentally-friendly treat for the tastebuds… What else?!
