The gallery features photographs and video works from the filming of Claudia Neubern’s documentary “Saudades do Rio Doce,” which will be screened at Le Méjan cinema on Sunday, August 30, at 6:30 p.m., alongside Claudia Serantes’s tempera paintings on wood and metal.
ÁGUA - AGUA: The River Speaks
The Aux Docks d’Arles gallery presents photographs and video footage from the filming of Claudia Neubern’s 2024 documentary on the Rio Doce disaster in Minas Gerais, Brazil (2015), as well as installations and tempera on wood by visual artist Claudia Serantes.
In 2015, the collapse of the Fundão dam released millions of cubic meters of toxic slurry into the Rio Doce in Brazil.
Drawing on footage shot by Claudia Neubern for her film, this exhibition reveals the traces of an ecological disaster and human resilience.
In contrast, Claudia Serantes’ installations and tempera paintings on wood create a space for symbolic healing, where nature is depicted in its capacity to welcome, console, and be reborn.
The title, *Água - Agua*, is a boundary-spanning word. Written in Brazilian Portuguese and Argentine Spanish, it serves as a reminder that the two artists speak—from two linguistic and national shores—of the same vital element. Here, water is not only a subject but also a common good and a symbol of what connects us and what we share.
