Description

Pascal Charvet returns to present a new edition of his translation of Propertius's poems dedicated to Cynthia, a work that has accompanied him since his first trip to Rome as a student. An opportunity to paint the portrait of a free Roman woman!
Cynthia, free Roman. Propertius Errance & Picard, February 2026 The sparkling story of Propertius and his lover Cynthia, however imagined, remains a true story. The poet's words wonderfully play on the ambiguous relationship between poetry and reality. Like many Roman women from wealthy families at the end of the 1st century BC, Cynthia was free by her condition and free in her choices of love. She was also a learned young woman and a talented poet. Sensual, seductive and willingly libertine, she takes us with her to the banquets and streets of Rome. A girl of her time, she carries with her a constant demand for equality and reciprocity in the enjoyment of love, at the heart of a world dominated by men. It is this free and elusive Cynthia that Pascal Charvet has chosen to recreate.
