On your way: landscapes and relief

Head out from Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and make your way along the lakes, saltmarshes and lagoons. You’ll cross Etang de Batayolles before taking the dyke separating Fangassier and Galabert lakes to Pont de Rousty bridge. Phare de la Gachole lighthouse then shows you the way to Tourvieille and Faraman. Take time to admire the local flora and fauna during your soothing slow tour of the local natural treasures – the very best way to visit Camargue. Last but not least, stop off in Salin-de-Giraud, a village near Arles reputed for its sea salt.

Must-see sights: keep your eyes peeled

Before leaving Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, stop off to visit the Eglise de Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer. This medieval church erected in the 10th century harbours the relics of Saint Mary Jacobe, Saint Mary Salome and Saint Sara in its crypt, and is a popular place of pilgrimage. After your fascinating plunge into the history of Saint Mary Magdalene, take time to visit the Salin de Giraud saltmarsh. Salt is harvested and stored here throughout the year, forming astonishing mounds. The Camargue Regional Nature Reserve is also a fabulous place to tour by bike, with its uniquely colourful patchwork of scenery and thriving animal life. Watch out for the many pink flamingos nesting in the surrounding areas.

Where to sleep?

Opt for the Hôtel Le Maset in Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer for a simple but comfortable night. The views over Etang des Petites Launes lake are stunning. If you’re seeking a more intimate experience, you’ll love Le Cocardier, a B&B in the village centre. Hôtel Le Mas de la Grenouillère , set next to the lakes, offers alluringly spacious rooms and a relaxing atmosphere. In Salin-de-Giraud, Les Cabanes de Gardian features 2 top-comfort guest rooms complete with thatched roof to really get you in the local mood. Cathy and Pascal will be delighted to welcome you to their little nest at the end of your hike in Camargue. A little bit more formal but resolutely charming, Maébrilu Camargue offers guest rooms and vast 5,000 m² grounds perfect for lapping up some sunshine by the pool. Last but not least, Camping Les Bois Flottés boasts an excellent choice of accommodation for the promise of a good night’s rest before heading off again tomorrow.

Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her. (Matthew 26,13)
